Emily Imeson

Emily hails from Orange in NSW, growing up regionally she developed a deep afinity with the Australian outback. Spending much of her time outdoors, on horseback or just exploring and observing her surrounds gave her an acute appreciation of the habitat we exist in. Her artwork aims to capture the balance between the visual landscape and the internal response generated by nature.

“Immersing myself in place is important, although, the feeling is hard to describe in words – which is where my art takes over – when I visually re-present something that is beyond vision, to incorporate both the seen, and the unknowable/unseeable elements of the places I am part of, and this object recalls an experience to transport me, is a highlight. Painting as a language.”

Seeing and Being Seen

A place of connections, interweaving over and through time, knotting together in air, water and earth. This entanglement os visually apparent in the twisted bodies and limbs of the malaleucas, a dynamic coexistence – one which can be seen, but is far from being alone. We cannot see the beautiful heaps of interrelations happening here, now, then and there, and we are not the only ones that can comprehend, react and impact.

These workse are both more, and less, than what was revealed to my eyes, they are embodied responses to perceiving the world and being in a place that is responsive. Responsive to change and aware of my presence. Birds call, Rocks grind. Water ripples. Fish hide. Trees bend. Wind shapes. Systems cycle.

We acknowledge the Bundjalung Peoples as traditional custodians of Bundjalung National Park which Emily often works on. This is one of the few parks that legally recognises the native title rights and First Nation’s connection to country.
