Joel Sorensen was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, where he developed a love of music and art from a young age. After completing his degree in early music on the Viola da gamba, he felt drawn to explore other forms of creative expression, and he began to experiment with sculpture.

This journey began once he moved to castlemaine. Here, he found the space and solitude he needed to hone his skills and develop his unique style. He began a self-taught apprenticeship as a sculptor, learning the craft through trial and error and drawing inspiration from the natural world around him.

Joel’s sculptures are characterised by their expressive energy and their ability to capture the essence of the animal-human relationship. He is interested in exploring the ways in which our interactions with animals can reveal deeper truths about ourselves and our place in the world. Through his work, he seeks to tap into the archetypal states of being that underlie our everyday experiences.

In addition to carving directly in stone and wood, Joel also works with clay and casts unique and editioned works in cement and plaster. His works have been exhibited in galleries and shows across Australia, and he has won numerous awards and accolades for his work.

Joel’s studio, located on the edge of the Chewton bushlands, provides him with a constant source of inspiration. He spends his days immersed in his work, drawing on his deep connection to the natural world to create sculptures that are both powerful and deeply resonant.
